# 4. Factions

Hero Arena Play will launch with **4 distinct factions**, each with its own playstyle, resource mechanic, signature units, and aesthetic. Faction asymmetry is one of Hero Arena Play's core design pillars: a Humans player and an Orcs player are not playing the same game with different art — they are playing different games on the same battlefield.

### 4.1 Council (LIVE)

**Status: Live on BSC testnet**

The Humans are the foundational faction of Hero Arena Play and the first to be fully released. They embody disciplined formation combat, balanced unit stats, and reliability under pressure.

* **Playstyle.** Balanced, mid-range. Strong defensive walls, versatile units, dependable damage output.
* **Strengths.** Adaptability, consistent card draw, strong support units (clerics, knights, archers).
* **Signature mechanic.** **Banner Bonuses** — placing units adjacent to a Banner unit grants stat bonuses, rewarding tight formations.
* **Recommended for.** New players. Humans are the most forgiving faction and the best entry point into Hero Arena Play's mechanics.

### 4.2 Dark Elves (Coming Soon)

**Status: In development — scheduled for release in Phase 2 (see Roadmap)**

The Dark Elves are masters of subterfuge, magic, and high-risk burst damage. Where Humans win through attrition, Dark Elves win through tempo and surprise.

* **Playstyle.** Aggressive tempo. High burst, fragile units, magic-heavy.
* **Strengths.** Stealth, debuffs, spell synergies, assassinations.
* **Signature mechanic.** **Shadow Step** — certain units can reposition without spending Move AP under specific conditions, enabling surprise attacks.
* **Recommended for.** Experienced players who enjoy combo lines and high-skill-ceiling play.

### 4.3 Dwarves (Coming Soon)

**Status: In development — scheduled for release in Phase 2 (see Roadmap)**

The Dwarves are the ultimate defensive faction. Slow to set up, but nearly unbreakable once entrenched, Dwarves win by outlasting their opponent.

* **Playstyle.** Defensive control. High HP, low mobility, strong equipment synergies.
* **Strengths.** Tankiness, defensive buildings, equipment-heavy decks.
* **Signature mechanic.** **Forge** — Dwarves can craft and upgrade equipment mid-match, exchanging tempo for long-term advantage.
* **Recommended for.** Patient players who enjoy positional play and resource management.

### 4.4 Tribe (Coming Soon)

**Status: In development — scheduled for release in Phase 3 (see Roadmap)**

The Orcs embody pure aggression. They sacrifice longevity for overwhelming early pressure, forcing opponents to react before their game plan can develop.

* **Playstyle.** Aggressive rush. Cheap units, high damage, low durability.
* **Strengths.** Early pressure, swarming, high attack values.
* **Signature mechanic.** **Bloodlust** — Orcish units gain stacking attack bonuses for each enemy they kill, snowballing kills into game-winning units.
* **Recommended for.** Aggressive players who want fast matches and decisive outcomes.

### 4.5 Faction Balance Philosophy

Hero Arena Play's balance team commits to a **patch cadence** of meaningful balance updates per quarter once all factions are live, informed by:

* Aggregate match win rates per faction
* Pick rates and ban rates in ranked play
* Tournament-level meta diversity
* Community feedback through governance proposals

Balance changes are released with transparent patch notes and an opportunity for players to dust (refund into in-game currency) cards that were significantly nerfed, ensuring no player feels punished for investing in a previously-strong card.
